Ten Signs It’s time for your aging loved one to be evaluated for additional care needs.
#9 – The “Past the Expiration Date” Syndrome
What is that growing in the vegetable drawer in the fridge? Our seniors get to a point where they don’t want to stand and cook any longer. They also go through a period where the signal from the stomach to the brain and back shuts down. This means they don’t ‘feel’ the urge to eat as we do, as they used to.
Sometimes you will find food going bad in mom or dad’s fridge, or find things sitting in there way longer than they should, with an expiration date that is long past over due. Make sure you look in the fridge once a week. Only bring food for a week at a time, rather than stocking up. If you bring too much, you will find they won’t use it.
This is sometimes a sign of other medical issues. So, you might want to have a conversation with mom or dad about what they are and aren’t eating. Some medications need food to help distribute them throughout their systems. Bring this up as well.
If you are concerned and aren’t quite sure how to approach the situation or conversation with your aging parents, let’s chat, we can help. We can help formulate a plan of action. We can even chat with your parents for you if you don’t think they are open to your help.
